It is Our 1st Birthday

The Birthday!

On 23rd September 2020, Kenya Kesho School for Girls turned 1!

2020 has been a strange and trying year, but thanks to our fantastic supporters pulling together, we are very glad to be able to share some positive news and updates this month. We have been doing informal learning under the trees since March with much laughter and lots of fun. We have all shared something negative (COVID 19) and turned it into something very positive. Our girls have learnt creativity – painting, drawing, dancing, singing and FOOTBALL! Can anyone come up with a winning name for our team? We have learnt to share ideas and have learnt to contribute to each other’s learning.

Alone we can do so little.
Together we can do so much.
Happy first birthday!

Kenya Kesho School for Girls Flying High With Jambojet!

Jambo Jet are one of our TOP sponsors and they fly to six magical destinations in Kenya.  For our first birthday their top team landed at the Kenya Kesho School for Girls for a day of team building activities and mentorship.  Our team vs Jambo Jet Team!  What fun!  The whole Jambo Jet operation is made up of 53% females.  Their Chief Engineer is a lady and 24/40 pilots are female.  What an amazing set of statistics.  Well done Jambo Jet.  We hope, one day, that some of our girls will be on your team.

Before Jambo Jet took off for a tour of the school and participation in field games, Nazia, our new marketing/fundraising manager welcomed them on board!

Nazia – Marketing/fundraising manager

Jambo Jet celebrated our birthday with us out in the field, where, had we been taller and bigger, we may have thoroughly beaten them at football and tug-o-war! Our teachers – Ruth, Judy and Festus were outstanding on the day.

More Celebrations

To celebrate our birthday we got our girls to do some colourings on small papers printed with a heart and a number 1 printed in the middle.

The girls also wrote some beautiful, powerful messages on their hearts. One said ‘I want to be a pilot’. We hope Jambo Jet will fly with her and we can all be proud!

We had a totally delicious light Swahili lunch – with mandazi, viazi karai na ukwaju sauce, samosas, meat balls and kaimati – all prepared for us by our fabulous cleaners – Saumu, Nicey, Cheisy. We had a luscious carrot cake prepared by Nazia’s mother and an endless supply of madafu, prepared by Bati, for our sportsmen and women. The whole operation was administered – with much panache – by Johnny – Peter’s messenger and friend for the past 45 years!

If you want to go fast, go alone.
If you want to go far, go together. African proverb

Birthday Fund-raising Project

We are very happy, we have reached our target!  Ten girls fully sponsored.  We couldn’t have done this without you! Ahsante Sana, Thank You!

Nazia, as her first fund-raising project, would raise funds for a minimum of ten girls’ fees for next year over a period of one month.  She did exceptionally well and raised enough money to sponsor 11 girls through school next year.  Well done Nazia and we would like to say THANK YOU VERY MUCH INDEED to all those who contributed and supported us for this campaign.
We would not be where we are today if it weren’t for our loyal team members – The trustees, the admin, the teachers, the school cleaners (and fabulous Swahili food cooks), the gardeners and the caretakers.  As a birthday ‘thank-you’ the team were gifted custom-made drinking bottles with our logo.  Thank you to one of our major sponsors.
We hope you have enjoyed reading our newsletter.
It is always such a pleasure to be able to share positive news with you.
Thank you so much for your ongoing support for The Kenya Kesho School for Girls.
