FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
SPONSORSHIP FAQs
A1 Our school has 2 pre-school years and 6 primary years. We support children who are around four or five years old when they start at The Kenya Kesho Primary School for Girls. They will be aged around 13 or 14 when leaving this school to go to secondary school.
A2 We understand 8 years is a long time. Many changes can happen during that time. If you start to sponsor a child and are unable to continue, we guarantee that your child will not miss out. Ideally, we will find an alternative sponsor for the child. You can pay the whole amount of GB£1,632 in one go or GB£204 per year.
A3 Many children from families in poverty in Kenya cease their education after primary school. Our Kwale Governor, Salim Mvurya, recognizes the value of education and if your child gets admission to a National Secondary School he will pay full fees to that school. If your child does not qualify for a National School they will have to find the fees to go to Secondary School themselves. Nearly all Secondary schools in Kenya are boarding and the cost is around GB£40 per month.
At the end of your sponsorship, it is up to you to decide whether you want to support your child at Secondary School. We will endeavour to place all the top children from The Kenya Kesho School for Girls into secondary schools with the help of her sponsor or by using funds from another source.
A4 Yes, very much so. There are many intangible benefits from an education like a reduced birth rate (almost 50% lower if the woman has at least a Primary education), less forced early marriage, more being able to fill in forms or read the dosage instructions on medicines.
A5 Once you fill in the sponsorship form you will be contacted with the name of the girl you have sponsored and her photo. You will be kept updated on her progress. You will get pictures of her work, her art and updates on your contribution to her education. We only sponsor 30 new girls each year.
A7 We don’t encourage it. You are already doing a lot by sponsoring the child to go to school. This is more support than you can imagine. Through the sponsorship platform, you will be able to send messages of encouragement and pictures of yourself. There is no direct contact with the child you will sponsor.
You will receive a minimum of three updates per year on your specific child through the educate a child platform. The charity produces 3 newsletters per year detailing the progress on all its projects.
A10 We discourage sending gifts to individuals:
• To avoid jealousy or children feeling left out.
• There is evidence that gift-giving can create expectation.
Yes, please. Here are some suggestions:
• Wax Crayons, ideally thick ones that are easy to hold.
• Short pencils similar to those from Ikea – ideal for small children.
• Stickers for rewarding good work.
• Art equipment.
• Reading books and jigsaw puzzles are always welcome and enjoyed hugely!
• PLEASE no sweets.
We welcome suggestions from primary teachers for suitable classroom equipment.
We do not divulge your contact details to the child.
From time to time we buy each child at our school the same small gift such as a bar of soap, a face flannel or something for school. We discuss what to get with teachers and then ask sponsors if they would like to contribute to a pot. If sponsors choose not to, that’s fine.
Yes, you can through the sponsor a child platform. Once you log in with your password you will be able to communicate, backwards and forwards, through the administrator. There is no direct contact.
Yes,of course. We love visitors. There is accommodation in the area – some close and some further along the beach. Speak to us for more details.
The school year in Kenya runs from January to December, so we sponsor 30 new children in January. We are still short of sponsors for the year 2023. If you would like to sponsor a girl from today, please contact us here.
Yes.
We have a waiting list of children. Girls can become available at any time as sponsors drop out due to financial difficulties or, sadly, death or as new pupils join throughout the year. We only support the poorest members of the community.
For current availability please email Sandra@kenyakeshoschoolforgirls.org
Most sponsors set up a monthly standing order (£17 per month) or pay yearly (£204) by cheque or bank transfer or through the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF). Payment is usually due from the January that the child starts although some sponsors choose to help the school by paying earlier.
If eligible, please complete a gift aid form
Yes.
We aim to exactly match receipts from sponsors to money paid to the school. Sometimes, exchange rate changes may make the receipts slightly higher or lower than the amount paid. If there is a surplus, it is used to improve the school. The Charity is run by volunteers and the trustees pay all the running costs, so nothing is taken off your payments for costs.
If you have any more questions, please email Sandra who will be glad to answer them.
